Process
I listened to the music of each artist and tried to interpret how the sounds they each produced translated into shapes.
Experimented with name placement of each artist and combined face and instrument shapes.
Started breaking apart each artist’s face and name to emphasize the boundaries they broke as respective artists in their field.
Further experimented with breaking apart the artist’s faces and names as well as including elements relating to them.
Started adding pieces of text to the poster drafts.
Started breaking the text apart and aligning it with the shapes already on the poster.
Started a new idea. I wanted each artist to be known for the iconic way they used their instruments through their hands. Used text to follow the string patterns of the electric guitar (Jimi Hendrix) and sitar (Ravi Shankar).
Final idea. I wanted the posters to convey who each artist was without explicitly saying their names or including pictures of them. Each poster is meant to represent icons. Madonna - signature gloves. Hendrix - hands playing electric guitar. Shankar - hands playing the sitar.
